Cleaning Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor fabrics have a PVC or PU coating which made them water repellent. A chemical additive or blocker is also added to make fabrics UV resistant.

When cleaning outdoor cushions, it is important to not to use hard bristle brushes or any abrasive cleaning method to avoid damaging these protective layers.

Spot Cleaning

  1. Brush off loose dirt.
  2. Spray on a cleaning solution of water and mild soap.
  3. Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
  4. Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
  5. Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
  6. Air dry.

Hand Washing

Soak fabric in a solution of 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water. Use a sponge or very soft bristle brush to lightly agitate the spill. Then rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue and allow fabric to air dry.

Mold and Mildew

Machine wash in cold water on delicate cycle with normal amounts of mild laundry detergent. Add up to 1 cup of bleach. Allow fabric to air dry.

More Tips

  • Make sure you test your fabrics on a conspicuous area prior to using any bleach.
  • It is best to clean the entire surface area to avoid water rings and residue.
  • The quicker you clean spills, the easier they can be to remove.
